Q: What is an addiction medicine physician?
A:

Addiction medicine physicians prevent, evaluate, diagnose, treat, and support recovery of persons with substance use disorders and their loved ones. Like in other chronic disease management (e.g diabetes, high blood pressure), addiction medicine physicians use evidence based medical therapies in combination with behavioral interventions to treat this complex, relapsing brain illness.

Q: Why would I use medicine to treat my addiction? Isn’t that replacing a drug with a drug?
A:

Medications for substance use disorders have been proven to be highly efficacious in the scientific literature. In the same way that we don’t tell diabetics to simply change their diet and exercise routine and prevent them from getting medications to lower blood sugar, I believe the science supports treating substance use disorders with both medication and behavioral therapies.

Q: What types of medicines do you prescribe?
A:

I specialize in opioid and alcohol use disorders. I utilize medicines that help to reduce cravings, ease withdrawal, and prevent overdose. In some patients, I assist in home based opioid detoxification. I also treat patients who struggle with anxiety and depression in addition to their substance use disorders.

Q: Do you do therapy?
A:

While talk therapy is a component of our sessions, I collaborate with various therapists throughout the Atlanta Metro and surrounding areas. While seeing me, I encourage patients to also see someone for counseling. We will usually meet less frequently and for less time than you will with a psychologist or therapist.

Q: Are we going to be meditating?
A:

Possibly and only if you want to. I have training in yoga and meditation instruction. There is evolving science that supports mindfulness meditation as good brain training to maintain balanced mood. If you are interested in learning practices for improved mood, cravings, sleep and attention, then I will incorporate it into our time together.

Q: What are your fees?
A:

If I am not on your insurance plan or for self-pay patients, I charge $350.00 for initial visits and $150.00 for follow up visits.

Q: What form of payments do you accept?
A:

Most credit cards — Visa, MasterCard, Discover, AMEX and Cash.
We do not accept personal checks.
